According to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Bulgaria and Azerbaijan have signed an intergovernmental agreement on the construction and redevelopment of “Shusha” Park in the city of Veliko Tarnovo.
The signing ceremony, held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, brought together former Foreign Minister Georg Georgiev and Anar Guliyev, Chairman of the State Committee on Urban Planning and Architecture of Azerbaijan. The agreement on the construction and landscaping of “Shusha” Park was formalized with their signatures. Representing the local administration, Veliko Tarnovo Deputy Mayor Snejana Daneva also signed the agreement.
Minister Georgiev emphasized that “the project, financed by the Azerbaijani side and implemented with the support of the Bulgarian government and Veliko Tarnovo municipality, demonstrates the strategic partnership between the two countries and reflects active dialogue at all levels, including the local level.”
He further highlighted that cooperation in cultural and educational fields develops on the basis of traditional respect for the shared history and spiritual roots of both peoples.
The new park will bear the name of Azerbaijan’s sister city, Shusha. The project is expected to enhance urban living standards and recreational opportunities for both residents and visitors. This initiative continues the collaboration between Veliko Tarnovo Municipality and the Heydar Aliyev Foundation. With the Foundation’s support, restoration and preservation work was carried out in 2015–2016 at the Trapezitsa Complex in Bulgaria’s former capital.
Additionally, in 2016, a project for the restoration and preservation of Trapezitsa Hill was implemented with financial support from the Heydar Aliyev Foundation. The initiative was carried out under the auspices of Mehriban Aliyeva, First Vice-President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, First Lady, and Chairperson of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation.
