Naim Süleymanoğlu, the legendary weightlifter who left an indelible mark on both world and Turkish weightlifting and earned the title “Pocket Hercules,” will be honored with a commemorative ceremony in his childhood town of Momchilgrad, marking the 8th anniversary of his passing.
The childhood home of the late champion has been meticulously restored and transformed into a museum by the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA), under the auspices of Turkey’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism. The museum’s official inauguration is set for November 18, with a high-profile attendance expected. The ceremony, organized by Momchilgrad Municipality, will welcome numerous distinguished guests from Turkey and Bulgaria.
Momchilgrad Municipality has previously paid tribute to Süleymanoğlu by naming the local sports complex after him and erecting a statue in his honor.
The two-story residence, now known as the Naim Süleymanoğlu Memorial House, offers visitors an in-depth look at the life and career of the world-renowned athlete. Outside the museum, a commemorative sign highlights local landmarks bearing his name, including a cultural center, city stadium, sports high school, and a street.
Inside, the museum exhibits personal belongings preserved since Süleymanoğlu’s childhood, photographs, presentations detailing key milestones of his career, and media coverage celebrating his achievements. On the opening day, additional personal items, select medals, certificates of appreciation, and gifts will be donated to the museum.
As part of the commemorative events, Momchilgrad will host the 1st International Weightlifting Tournament in Naim Süleymanoğlu’s memory, with the presidents of the Turkish and Bulgarian Weightlifting Federations expected to attend both the opening and awards ceremonies.
