Turkish company wins major waste collection tender in Sofia

Turkish company Norm Industrial Products Manufacturing and Foreign Trade – Sofia Branch has won three separate municipal tenders for waste collection and street cleaning services in Bulgaria’s capital, Sofia.

The company signed a five-year contract with the Sofia Municipality, securing responsibility for maintaining cleanliness in three central districts — Ilinden, Nadezhda, and Serdika. Norm Industrial Products was the only foreign bidder among competing companies.

According to the contract details, the Turkish firm submitted a bid worth 46.7 million leva (approximately 1.3 billion Turkish lira). The company is expected to begin operations on January 7, two thousand twenty-six.

Previous sabotage attempts

Earlier in July, the same company had sought to participate in a similar tender for the Krasno Selo district but reportedly faced pressure from local competitors. During that period, several of the company’s garbage trucks were set on fire by unidentified individuals, drawing public attention to the incident.

Another Turkish firm had also attempted to enter the tender process but was disqualified on the grounds of a revoked operating license.

Waste management crisis in Sofia

At the beginning of this month, Sofia’s Krasno Selo district experienced a severe waste management crisis, prompting local authorities to launch a special clean-up operation. Following consultations with the Ministry of Justice, the municipality reached an agreement allowing low-risk inmates to temporarily assist in sanitation efforts.
