Chernoochene Mayor Aycan Ahmed has announced plans to build a modern wastewater treatment facility in the district, addressing a long-standing infrastructure gap in the region.
Currently, the Kardzhali province hosts wastewater treatment plants only in Kardzhali city and Mestanlı. The new project, with an estimated budget of 4.5 million leva, will provide services to settlements in Chernoochene and surrounding villages that are equipped with sewage systems. The facility is planned to be constructed on land in Pryaporets village.
Mayor Ahmed confirmed that in September 2024, the municipality applied to the Executive Environment Agency (PUDOOS) to secure grant funding, and the project has since received approval. The public procurement process for contractors has also been initiated.
According to technical specifications, the treatment plant will cover 2,455.30 square meters, with a total enclosed area of 341.40 square meters, ensuring state-of-the-art treatment capacity for the local population.
Additionally, Mayor Ahmed noted that the municipality plans to implement mobile treatment units in larger villages to complement the central facility. Negotiations with potential contractors are ongoing, and preparatory work is actively underway to ensure timely project completion.
The initiative is expected to significantly improve wastewater management in Chernoochene, enhance environmental protection, and support sustainable development across the region.
