Visually impaired individuals participate in White Cane Day walk in Kardzhali

In Kardzhali, a commemorative walk was held on October 15 to mark World White Cane and Safety Day for the Visually Impaired, with participation from visually impaired individuals and community members. The event took place along the city’s pedestrian areas and main streets, highlighting accessibility and inclusion.

Students from Yordan Yovkov Secondary School in Kardzhali joined the walk, accompanying the visually impaired participants. The initiative provided students with a firsthand opportunity to observe the daily challenges faced by visually impaired people and to actively support them, fostering empathy and awareness.

Aksel Emin, director of the Nedyalka Kamburova Social Rehabilitation and Integration Center for the Visually Impaired, explained the purpose of the event:

“Our goal with today’s walk is to help the public understand what it truly means to live with visual impairment. The white cane is not only a practical tool for mobility but also a symbol of independence. Walking alongside visually impaired individuals allows us to empathize with their experiences and gain a deeper understanding of their daily lives,” Emin said.

Emin further noted that the center currently provides support to 21 visually impaired individuals, while the total number of visually impaired people in the Kardzhali region is estimated at approximately 170.
