Government says no military threat to Bulgaria amid Middle East tensions

As Israel and the United States carried out joint attacks on Iran, and the Iranian military launched retaliatory strikes with dozens of ballistic missiles, tensions in the region escalated, prompting Bulgaria’s National Security Council to convene.

Following the council meeting, Interim Prime Minister Andrey Gyurov said that according to reports from security agencies and the Ministry of Defense, there is currently no direct military threat to Bulgarian territory.

“The government is monitoring developments in real time. Our top priority is ensuring national security and the safety of Bulgarian citizens in the region,” Gyurov stated.

Emphasizing that Bulgaria is not a party to the conflict and has not participated in any military operations, Gyurov added:

“No request has been made to use Bulgarian territory for military purposes. There has been no change in the combat readiness level of our armed forces.”

The prime minister also noted that at this stage, there is no risk to the lives, health, or well-being of Bulgarian citizens. The Ministry of Interior and security agencies have implemented preventive measures to maintain public order, and there is no reason for concern.

A 24-hour crisis desk has been established within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Bulgarian diplomatic missions in the region are in continuous contact with local Bulgarian communities. Evacuation plans are also being assessed for potential implementation if necessary.

Gyurov called on Bulgarian citizens in Iran and neighboring countries to strictly follow the instructions of local authorities and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The interim prime minister further noted that possible economic repercussions and potential increases in migration pressure are being analyzed. Border units are on heightened alert to secure national and European Union borders, with state institutions operating in full coordination.
